The Jo is a wooden staff that, according to legend, was created in the 17th century by the samurai warrior Katsuyoshi after being defeated with an iron-reinforced Bo against the two bokken of Musashi, the most famous of the samurai.

After an inspiring dream, Katsuyoshi created this shorter weapon and developed several techniques with which he finally managed to defeat Musashi.

They are usually made of different woods. In addition to Kobudo, it is often used as a complement in Aikido.

The Jo staff, often simply called "Jo", is a traditional Japanese weapon that is used in several martial arts, the main ones being:

Aikido: Perhaps the martial art most famous for its use of the Jo stick. In Aikido, the Jo is used to practice techniques of defense, attack and control of the opponent.

Jodo: This is a martial art specifically focused on the use of the Jo staff. It focuses on using the Jo for both defense and offense, often against an opponent armed with a sword (ken).

Kobudo: This is a general term referring to traditional Okinawan martial arts. Although the Jo staff is not native to Okinawa, it has been integrated into many Kobudo schools and is taught as part of the curriculum in some of them.

Iaido: Although Iaido is primarily focused on the use of the Japanese sword (katana), some schools include training with the Jo staff to improve understanding of the principles of movement, balance and control.

These are just some of the martial arts in which the Jo staff is used, but it is important to note that it can vary slightly in length, weight and usage depending on the specific martial art and school of practice.
