Wooden Bokken sword with tsuka-ito grip
Bokken sword approximately 100cm long, for martial arts Aikido, Iaido, Kendo, Bokuto.
Although the word Bokken is the most widely used outside of Japan to refer to the wooden sword used in martial arts, in reality the more correct term in Japanese is Bokutō (lit. "wooden katana"). Just as the term Samurai is commonly used outside of Japan but the Japanese generally prefer the term Bushi .
The term Bokken, from a Japanese point of view, refers to a generic sword of any shape, not necessarily similar to a katana; compared to bokutō, the term is therefore more generic as it could refer to either a katana or any other type of sword.
Finally, depending on the school, the bokutō can take on different shapes and sizes; for example, the Niten Ichiryu uses thin wooden swords, with very little curvature and no tsuba.
It is mainly used in training for martial arts that involve the use of the sword: in Kendō, in particular, it is used for the execution of the ten kata.
IAIDO: belongs to the disciplines of traditional Japanese Budo such as Kendo, Jodo and Naginata.
AIKIDO: Japanese martial art practiced both with bare hands and with the traditional bladed weapons of Japanese Budō, mainly: "ken" (sword), "jō" (staff) and "tantō" (dagger).
KOBUDO: refers in general to the traditional martial arts used on the island of Okinawa and is characterised by the use of a large number of traditional weapons, mostly of peasant origin.
KENDO: Japanese martial art, a form of budō and a combat sport that derives from the evolution of fighting techniques with the katana.
